The Ignorant state of Followership in Nigeria.

When it comes to political commentaries, most Nigerians will first scroll to the bottom of an article or essay to know the writer before making a decision either to read or discard the article. If the writer is suspected to support the opponents of their favorite politicians, such Nigerians will simply grimace, ignore the piece and condemn the writer. This is irrespective of the quality/merit or otherwise of the article.

This is one of the biggest problems confronting our nation. Actually, the number one bane of our nation's political and economic development is poor followership! Sadly, those of us that are concerned for our nation's growth are fewer than those gullible and naïve people that follow individual politicians blindly like zombies. Yet, for our nation to achieve progress, we all need (at least, once in a while) to put aside our petty political affiliations and supports for mere individual politicians, to listen to other folks of different political persuasions and, especially those that care mostly for the nation's interest. To the ignorant followers of individual politicians, it's a crime for anyone to support someone else other than the politicians of their choice. That person will be labelled as a paid commentator. Conveniently, they choose to forget that there are some of us who just want any capable person to lift our nation up from its current state of economic doldrum. It's the nation that matters to us, not an individual, even if the individual is seen as a saint or a demigod.
