Nigeria, my ancestral homeland, is a
terrifyingly funny place. And it is so in view of the strange melodramatic intrigues
that take place in its political landscape. In the early 1980s, the Lagos State
government of Lateef Jakande wanted to construct several Metro lines to
link up the city of Lagos with the rest of the state. But due to political
differences, the leadership of Shehu Shagari used its federal might to delay
and frustrate the project's take-off. Shortly afterward, General Buhari came to
government through a coup in 1984 and cancelled the project in its entirety.
And now 34 years later, the same Buhari, now a civilian president, merely
commissioned a one-line metro project (that was actually started by his
predecessors) and the country was agog with massive celebration! What a
country?
