REMEMBERING OUR HEROES ON MEMORIAL DAY

It's once again the glorious 4th Monday of the month of May when we all, as Americans, remember and honor those who patriotically lay down their lives for our collective freedom.

Over the years though, a lot of us seem to have forgotten the reason for the Memorial Day as we get carried away by the urge to feed ourselves silly with frenzy on hot dogs, burgers and barbecued steak
on a day meant for a better purpose.

Personally, I believe a special way to appreciate and celebrate the men and women whose lives were lost while in the service to our great nation is by sparing
some time in the day to remind ourselves or discover what it means to be a hero through the following words on marble.

"For love of country they accepted death..." - James A. Garfield.

"The greatest glory of a free-born people is to transmit that freedom to their children." - William Havard.

"The dead soldier's silence sings our national anthem." - Aaron Kilbourn.

"For death is no more than a turning of us over from time to eternity." - William Penn.

"On thy grave the rain shall fall from the eyes of a mighty nation!" - Thomas William Parsons.

"The brave die never, though they sleep in dust: Their courage nerves a thousand living men." - Minot J. Savage.

"We come, not to mourn our dead soldiers, but to praise them." - Francis A. Walker.

"And I'm proud to be an American,
where at least I know I'm free.
And I won't forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me." - Lee Greenwood.
