Usually,
many of us utilize the Memorial Day holiday to chill, barbeque, travel out of
state or go to the beach. That is cool. But we should also endeavor to
dedicate, at least, a few minutes to meditate, discuss and remember all the
folks who died while serving their country in the United States armed forces.
And
while meditating or discussing the importance of the day, it will not hurt to
know the historical background of this holiday.
Memorial
Day was first observed in 1868, when it was called Decoration Day. It was a day
specially set aside to honor the 600,000 U.S. men and women who died in the
Civil War. Since then, millions more have served in the United States armed
forces. And many of these heroes have made the ultimate sacrifice.
