The Super Bowl Brouhaha.

It was the day after Super Bowl last year. I was at work thinking of how to go about the day’s assignment of duties to my guys. Casually, one of them asked how I felt about “yesterday’s game”. Shrugging my shoulders nonchalantly, I answered that I did not watch the game. The guy asked if my team was not among the two teams that played. This time, my response was that I had no football team. At this stage, I wished he had left me alone in my thoughts. Rather, he went on to ask if I was one of “those people” who preferred basketball to football. Now exasperated, I looked at him and stated that I had no basketball team, no baseball team, no hockey team, no “nothing”.

Was he angry? “What kind of a guy are you…with no interest in sports?”

I retorted quickly that I had interest in soccer, boxing, martial arts and Track & Field.

“You can’t compare those ones with football!” he screamed like he was about to cry.

“Alright…fine…can we now get some work done?” I said firmly.

The guy sulked all day, not hiding his disdain for me.

Fast-forward to yesterday morning. I tried everything to avoid all discussions about the Super Bowl. But toward the end of the shift, I saw a patrol car trying to pull me over. It was my football-loving guy. Looking like he had the most important thing in the world to tell me, he said: “With all due respects sir…if you can watch the Super bowl, you’ll realize what you’ve been missing all your life…”

“Ah…okay.” I nodded my head in dismay at such a fanatic devotion. As he walked back to his car though, I decided subconsciously to watch the game.



 

 

 

 

 

Must Ann Coulter be so Dumb and Ignorant?

According to a news report, Ann Coulter says Americans who care about the World Cup are 'a sign of the nation's moral decay' 

  

Coulter's case against soccer is far-ranging: it's "foreign," you can't use your hands, liberal moms like it, and it doesn't "present a constant threat of personal disgrace." "If more 'Americans' are watching soccer today, it's only because of the demographic switch effected by Teddy Kennedy's 1965 immigration law," she concludes. "I promise you: No American whose great-grandfather was born here is watching soccer."

I never knew this woman was so dumb…and very much ignorant! Obviously, the current world cup tournament in Brazil and the preponderance of immigrants in the Team USA is irritating to her.

But, first of all, does she know that whether born here (United States) or not, her great-grandfather was still an immigrant…all the way from Europe?

Secondly, does she even know where soccer originated from? The answer is Europe and that was where her great-grandfather came from...a foreign land!

And, thirdly, does she even have a elementary knowledge of soccer, basketball and football? They all came from a “foreign” place called Europe! 

The game of Soccer was originally called football (and still is called football all over the world except America). Basketball was devised from Netball. Football was modified from an original sporting event called rugby (and it’s still called rugby in Europe). And, of course, baseball was created out of cricket. None of the existing popular, sporting events in the United States originated from America!

Ann Coulter may be an ultra-conservative Republican. That is fine by me because it’s a free country we have in United States. And the fact that she is a rabid racist is one factor that can only elicit sympathy from me. But must she be so dumb on top of everything else?
