Too Hot by Kool & the Gang
This morning, I was privileged to listen to my favorite old school radio station as it played the Kool & the Gang's classic track single "Too Hot"
from their best-selling 1979 album "Ladies Night".
As usual, I found the lyric very deep, a food for thought, starting with the words;
"At seventeen, we fell in love, high school sweethearts..."
And as I always do each time I listen to that song, I wondered aloud; what does a 17-year-old know about love, not to talk of marriage? At that tender age, irrespective of the person's level of physical developments, whatever they feel can only be classified as mere infatuation. And no infatuation is ever emotionally deep or strong enough to constitute love. In fact, infatuation is like a dangerous pit where whoever falls into it can only make a mess. Therefore, if care is not taken, whoever makes a life-long commitment such as procreation or marriage based on mere infatuation may end up with physical and emotional scars.
Again, I was touched as I listened to the song's emotional conclusion with the words;
"What a mess we made. ..
Feeling the pain when you lose,
you gotta run for shelter,
you gotta run for shade 'cause it's too hot...
Flyin' high we never took the time,
to stop and feel the need
Funny how those years go by
Changing you, changing me...
Too hot...too hot baby..."
