On Tuesday,
the Supreme Court of Oklahoma ruled in a 7-2 decision that the Ten Commandments
statue on Capitol grounds violated the state’s constitution and therefore, must
be removed. Since this ruling, Christians across the United States have been
expressing self-righteous disgust, disappointment and anger over the court’s
decision.
As a
Christian though, I refuse to be concerned or outraged by the legally-ordered removal
of a mere object of decoration when several pressing issues are calling for
attention. Isn’t this the United States where popular religions have largely been
bastardized and turned into one big joke? This is a country where a guy
(well-known in his community as a Muslim cleric) and who, actually was observing
the current Islamic fasting season, went on a drive-by shooting of his rivals
in the drug-dealing business. This is a nation where the most vocal Christians are
the most racist, prejudiced and hateful of people different from their race.
And this is God’s own country where a lot of the so-called religious people are
closet gays, on-the-down low, pedophiles, sexual perverts and serial hypocrites.
They preach one thing in public but practice something else in private.
By the way,
George Carlin (American social critic, actor, and author) had the following reaction
to the issue: "Here is the real reason that we can't have the Ten
Commandments in a courthouse: You cannot post 'Thou shalt not steal,' 'Thou
shalt not commit adultery,' and 'Thou shalt not lie' in a building full of
lawyers, judges, and politicians."

Wow!
Simply awesome!
I knew it! Somehow, I knew you'd write about yesterday's court ruling in Oklahoma....lol!
You are quite right! It's all hypocrisy!
I must confess, as a Christian, I was disappointed with the court decision. But your opinion on the issue also made sense. There is just too much nonsense going on in the American versions of organized religions.
Jumoke, my sister, it is not just a matter of organized religions. Every facet of life in our dear America is tainted with hypocrisy.
This is thought-provoking! I totally concur!
Ours is a nation where every aspect of life and, more so, the sacred ways of our life as a people have been subverted severally by religious posturing.
It was good that you acknowledged your Christianity. At first, I didn't know what to make of you. I thought you were just another liberal with crazy opposition to our values as a people. But after a careful reading of the piece, I realized you had some points after all. It's surely a food for thought and more for us Christians than people in other religions.
This is an awesome argument, brother. Kudos!
I love your description of the statue as a "mere object of decoration". How many of the brains behind the statue practice or comply with the moral rules laid out in the ten commandments?? Unless they do, the statue is just what it is: a mere object of decoration!
As much as I agree with your submission, I would still have expected you (as a Christian) to join in the condemnation of the horrible court's decision. After all, after the removal of the Ten Commandment statue, what other important monument do we know the liberals will oppose?
This is so true.
what a society? A man who was observing the fasting thing went for a drive-by shooting? What a shame! I also agree with you about so-called Christians being involved in hatred, racism and other bullshit. It really goes to show how dysfunctional we are as a people. Thanks for the wonderful piece!
The George Carlin's quote is fantastic! It summarizes everything about the ugly fate of the Ten Commandments statue.
This is an amazing piece. I totally agree with you.
